Reading the Room Is the Actual Job
When I'm behind the decks, I'm not just listening to the music. I'm watching. Constantly. I'm asking myself:
- Who's on the floor right now, and who's about to leave?
- What age group is driving the energy?
- Are people singing along or just swaying?
- Is this the moment to push harder, or pull back?
These aren't things you plan in advance. They happen in real time, and they change every few minutes.
How a Night Actually Takes Shape
Early evening, while guests are still chatting over coffee, I'll play something warm and upbeat but quiet enough that nobody has to shout. As dinner wraps up, the tempo nudges upward. By the time the first dance is done, I'm building momentum in waves: energy up, a breather, then higher again.
A Spotify playlist can't do this. It doesn't know that the speeches overran by 20 minutes, or that half the room is 60+ and needs Motown before they'll move. A wedding DJ adapts to all of it.
The Moments That Stick
After 2,500+ weddings, I've noticed the moments guests remember aren't always the obvious ones. They're:
- The first track that properly fills the floor, when the night shifts gear
- The unexpected classic that gets three generations dancing at once
- A well-timed slow song that pulls couples together and gives everyone a breather
- The last song, when the whole room is singing and nobody wants to leave
Each one needs the right song at the right moment. Not just from a list, but from reading what's actually happening in the room.
It's Not Just About the Music
Song choice is only part of it. Volume matters, loud enough to energise but not so loud people can't talk. Announcements matter, warm and clear, not robotic. Transitions matter, smooth enough that nobody notices the genre just shifted from Motown to house.
When you're comparing DJs, ask how they read a room. Ask what happens when a request doesn't fit the energy. Ask what they do when the schedule shifts.
