My Experience as a DJ at The Barns at Redcoats

I've performed at The Barns at Redcoats many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.

Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.

Winner of Best Barn Wedding Venue in the East of England at the 2026 Wedding Industry Awards, and it is easy to see why. Dating from 1771 and lovingly refurbished in 2018, The Barns at Redcoats combine historic charm with proper modern infrastructure. The beam-filled barn seats up to 120 for the wedding breakfast, expanding to 200 for the evening, with the quirky Cowshed Bar and wildflower meadow adding genuine character. The adjacent Farmhouse at Redcoats provides 28 hotel rooms so your guests can stay the night without worrying about taxis. Just 30 minutes from London.

The Main Barn

The barn itself is a beautiful room to work with. Original beams, exposed brickwork, and a ceiling height that gives the space warmth without swallowing the sound. Timber and brick are forgiving materials acoustically. They absorb just enough to stop the room sounding harsh at higher volumes, while still letting the bass carry through the space naturally. The result is a room where you can have background music during dinner that actually stays in the background, and a dancefloor later in the evening where the energy builds without anyone needing to shout over the music.

I set the system up to work with the barn's proportions rather than fighting them. The room is long rather than square, so I position speakers to cover the dancefloor and top table area evenly, with the volume dropping off gently towards the far end where people are chatting. Uplighting along the brickwork and beams transforms the feel once the sun goes down. The warm tones of the stone pick up colour beautifully, and you can shift the mood from soft amber during dinner to something more vibrant for the party.

The Cowshed Bar

This is what gives Redcoats its edge over other barn venues. The Cowshed is a separate bar area with its own character, rustic and relaxed, and it works as a natural overflow space during the evening. Guests drift between the dancefloor and the bar without the two competing with each other. From a DJ's perspective, that separation is genuinely useful. It means the people who want to dance can have proper volume and energy, while those who want to sit and talk have somewhere comfortable to go. You do not have to compromise one for the other.

The Grounds and Outdoor Spaces

The wildflower meadow, manicured English gardens, and the area by the old grain store give you options for outdoor ceremonies and drinks receptions. During summer weddings, I run background music outside for the drinks reception, keeping the mood going while your photographer works through the group shots. The transition from outdoors to the barn for the evening feels natural rather than forced, and the change in atmosphere as guests step inside to a lit, warm room with music is one of those moments that sets the tone for the rest of the night.

The Barn-Hotel Advantage

What makes Redcoats unusual is the combination of a genuine character barn with proper hotel accommodation next door. That matters more than people realise. When your guests have rooms on site, nobody leaves early to catch a taxi. The dancefloor stays full later into the evening, the energy builds rather than fading, and you get that feeling of everyone being properly together for the whole celebration. It is a small thing on paper, but it makes a real difference to how the night plays out.

Location

The Barns at Redcoats sit just outside Hitchin in North Hertfordshire, with easy access from the A1(M). Around 30 minutes from London by train, with Hitchin station on the mainline to King's Cross. Stevenage and Letchworth are both within 10 minutes by car.

What Couples Say

Where do we start with Tony?! Right from the start of our wedding planning Tony was a great help providing ideas of how to make our day special and how to utilise music throughout the day to create the picture we wanted. On the day he captured our music style perfectly, with a great selection for the drinks reception and building in some special songs for certain individuals. Then the evening dancing! Tony knows his music and gave Tony our style choices but he had free rein to manage the night. Tony evoked happy emotions throughout the night. It was brilliant. As the bride I only left the dance floor when I had to say goodbye to people. Otherwise I was happily dancing the night away with songs that I loved, I was hoarse from all the singing.
