My Experience as a DJ at Camfield Place
I've performed at Camfield Place many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.
Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.
Known as the 'Home of Pure Romance', Camfield Place is a 13th-century manor rebuilt in the Italianate style, set within rolling Capability Brown parkland. Once home to both Beatrix Potter and Dame Barbara Cartland, it carries genuine literary heritage that adds a story to your day before you even write your own. The Italian Garden suits intimate ceremonies of 40 to 50, while the Main Lawn opens up for larger marquee celebrations with sweeping views across the lake. Just 17 miles from central London, this family-run estate offers something you simply won't find at the larger hotels.
The Italian Garden
The Italian Garden is where most ceremonies happen at Camfield Place, and it is a genuinely romantic setting. Enclosed, intimate, seating 40 to 50, with the kind of atmosphere that makes guests pay attention without anyone needing to ask. For outdoor ceremonies here, I keep the music understated. A gentle system that carries the processional music across the garden without competing with the natural setting. The enclosed walls of the garden help contain the sound, so even at low volumes the music reaches every seat clearly.
The transition from the garden ceremony to the drinks reception on the surrounding lawns feels natural. Guests step out of the intimate ceremony space into the wider parkland, and the shift in scale mirrors the shift in mood, from the quiet focus of the vows to the relaxed energy of celebrating with a drink in hand.
The Main Lawn and Marquee
For larger celebrations, a marquee on the Main Lawn is the option, and the setting is genuinely striking. Sweeping views across Capability Brown parkland and down to the lake, with the manor house behind you. The scale of the grounds means the marquee can be positioned to make the most of the views, and the open aspect of the lawn gives the celebration a sense of space and freedom.
Marquees have their own acoustic character. Canvas walls absorb less sound than brick or timber, so I adjust the system to work with that. The benefit is that you are starting with a blank canvas, literally. The layout, the lighting, the dancefloor position, all of it can be designed from scratch. I work with couples during the planning stage to position the DJ setup and dancefloor where they will have the most impact, usually close to the main entrance so guests are drawn straight to the energy when they come back in from the grounds.
Literary Romance
Camfield Place is not just a pretty setting. It has a genuine story. Beatrix Potter spent childhood summers here, and Dame Barbara Cartland lived at the estate for decades, writing many of her 700-plus novels in the house. That literary heritage gives the venue a depth that most marquee-on-a-lawn venues simply do not have. For couples who love the idea of their wedding having a story within a story, it adds something that cannot be manufactured.
The family-run nature of the estate shows in how the day is managed. This is not a corporate events operation. It is a private home that opens for weddings, and that personal touch carries through to the experience. The flexibility is greater, the conversations are more direct, and the whole day feels like it belongs to you rather than being one of a dozen weddings that month.
Location
Camfield Place is in Essendon, near Hatfield, Central Hertfordshire. Just 17 miles from central London, with Hatfield station nearby on the Great Northern line to King's Cross. The A1(M) is close for guests driving. There is no on-site accommodation, but Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City both have hotels within 10 minutes, and the estate can advise on local options for guests staying overnight.
What Couples Say
Our wedding day was absolutely joyful, and that's largely down to Tony. This was the second marriage for both of us and he brought this wonderful sense of celebration to everything he did. He delivered a story about us with genuine joy and celebration of our relationship. The dance floor celebration lasted all night. But more than just creating party energy, he helped create a day where everyone felt celebrated. He made our wedding day feel like what it truly was, a joyful occasion worth celebrating brilliantly.
