My Experience as a DJ at Hanbury Manor
I've performed at Hanbury Manor many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.
Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.
Hanbury Manor blends Jacobean architecture with 200 acres of Hertfordshire parkland near Ware. Three wedding spaces give you genuine choice: Poles Hall (the original chapel with vaulted ceilings and chandeliers) for a traditional feel, the Garden Court for outdoor ceremonies in a walled garden with a glass canopy for evening dancing, or the Thundridge Suite overlooking the championship golf course. With 161 rooms on site, a spa, and two restaurants, your guests are well looked after from the moment they arrive.
Poles Hall
The original chapel, and still the most dramatic ceremony space. Vaulted ceilings, stained glass, chandeliers, and a minstrel's gallery that adds a sense of theatre before anyone has said a word. The room has the proportions and materials of a building designed for voices to carry, which works in your favour for ceremonies but needs careful handling for the evening.
The vaulted stone ceiling creates natural reverb. That is wonderful for ceremony music, where a little room ambience adds emotion and depth. A string piece or a carefully chosen song fills Poles Hall beautifully. But for evening dancing, that same reverb can turn bass-heavy music into a wash of sound if you do not manage it. I adjust the EQ to suit the room, pulling back the low frequencies slightly and keeping the mids and highs clean. The result is a dancefloor that sounds clear and punchy rather than boomy. The chandeliers and stained glass respond well to uplighting too, and the room takes on a completely different character once the sun goes down.
The Garden Court
The Garden Court is the most versatile of the three spaces. A walled garden for outdoor ceremonies, with a glass canopy that provides cover for evening receptions and dancing. The combination of outdoor and covered space gives you flexibility that few venues in Hertfordshire can match.
Acoustically, the glass canopy creates an interesting environment. Glass reflects sound sharply, so without care the music can feel harsh. But the open sides of the canopy let excess sound escape rather than bouncing it around endlessly. I use that to my advantage, positioning the speakers to direct sound towards the dancefloor while letting the reflections dissipate through the open walls. The result is clean, focused sound in the middle of the action, with a natural drop-off for guests sitting further back. On summer evenings, with the walled garden lit and the canopy overhead, the atmosphere is genuinely special.
The Thundridge Suite
The Thundridge Suite is the contemporary option, overlooking the championship golf course. Modern proportions, consistent surfaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the room with natural light during the day and frame the parkland views at night. For couples who want a clean, polished setting rather than period drama, this is the room.
The acoustics here are the most straightforward of the three. Flat ceiling, carpeted floor, and modern wall finishes mean the sound is predictable and easy to control. I can set the system up knowing exactly how the room will respond, which means less time troubleshooting and more time focusing on the music itself. The windows are the room's best feature, and I work with them rather than against them. During the day, the golf course views do the work. In the evening, the glass becomes reflective, bouncing the uplighting and dancefloor colour back into the room and doubling the visual impact.
Three Spaces, Three Approaches
What makes Hanbury Manor interesting from a DJ's perspective is that each room demands a genuinely different approach. The same system settings and speaker positions that work in Poles Hall would be wrong for the Garden Court, and neither would suit the Thundridge Suite. I prepare for each space individually, because the couple's choice of room tells me something about the kind of celebration they want, and the music and sound should reflect that.
The Destination Wedding Angle
With 161 rooms, a spa, two restaurants, and a championship golf course, Hanbury Manor is a destination in its own right. Your guests check in, play golf, use the spa, eat well, and arrive at the wedding relaxed and ready to celebrate. That matters for the evening. Guests who have been looked after all day bring a different energy to the dancefloor. They are not tired from rushing, not stressed about logistics. They are present, and that presence makes the party better.
Location
Hanbury Manor is just outside Ware in East Hertfordshire. Close to the A10, within 40 minutes of central London by car, and accessible from Ware station. Stansted Airport is around 30 minutes away, which is useful for guests travelling from further afield. The 200-acre grounds mean there is ample parking on site.
What Couples Say
There was something almost magical about how Tony wove our wedding day together. The love story he shared about us felt like poetry, not flowery or over-the-top, just true and beautiful. The music he chose seemed to create an invisible thread connecting all the different moments. Even the interactive quiz felt less like a game and more like a celebration of our relationships. The dance floor had this electric atmosphere that kept people moving without anyone feeling pressured. He created space for quiet moments during speeches and then shifted seamlessly into celebration. It was atmospheric in the truest sense, a mood that enveloped everyone.
