Set in 250 acres of parkland, Knebworth House is one of the most instantly recognisable estates in Hertfordshire. The lovingly restored 400-year-old Lodge and Manor Barns seat up to 180 for the wedding breakfast, expanding to 300 for the evening party. For something more intimate, the House itself hosts ceremonies for 80 in stunning Gothic surroundings. The Cobbold and Lytton Barns open onto a private garden with direct access to the Formal Gardens, perfect for drinks and photographs. Only one wedding per day, with complimentary parking for all guests.

The Barns

The Lodge and Manor Barns are the heart of most Knebworth weddings. They are 400 years old, beautifully restored, with exposed timber frames, brick floors, and a character that modern barn conversions spend a fortune trying to imitate. Manor Barn is the larger of the two and seats up to 180 for the wedding breakfast. It is a long, rectangular space with a high vaulted ceiling and beams that draw the eye upward.

From a DJ's perspective, the barns are interesting acoustically. The high timber ceilings and hard floor create more natural reverb than you might expect. That means the room fills with sound quickly, which is good for atmosphere but needs careful management during speeches and announcements. I position my speakers to work with the room shape rather than against it, keeping speech audio clean and music at the right level without it becoming muddy. The brick floors are ideal for dancing, not too slippery, not too grippy.

The barn layout means the DJ setup sits at one end of the room with clear sightlines to the entire space. When the dancefloor is set up in the evening, dining tables pull back naturally and the room transforms without needing a full reset. The connected Cobbold and Lytton Barns create overflow space for the evening, which helps when guest numbers grow from 180 for dinner to 300 for the party.

Knebworth House

For ceremonies of up to 80, the House itself is an option that very few venues can match. The Gothic exterior (added by the Lytton family in 1843 over the original Tudor manor) is unmistakable, and the interior rooms have the kind of ornate detailing that photographs incredibly well. The Banqueting Hall has heraldic stained glass, carved screens, and a minstrels' gallery.

Most couples hold the ceremony in the House and then move guests across to the barns for the reception. That transition gives your photographer a natural window for couple portraits in the Formal Gardens, and it means your guests get to experience two completely different atmospheres in one day.

The Grounds

The 250 acres of parkland are part of what makes Knebworth feel so different from other Hertfordshire venues. The Formal Gardens, originally designed by Edwin Lutyens, offer structured beauty with lawns, herb gardens, and the Garden Gazebo for outdoor ceremonies. Beyond the formal areas, the parkland stretches out in every direction, known internationally as the site of legendary rock concerts by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Oasis, and Robbie Williams.

The private garden between the barns is where most drinks receptions happen, and it works well for that. Sheltered, green, with direct access back into the barns when guests want to move indoors. On a summer evening, the combination of the garden and the open barn doors creates the kind of indoor-outdoor flow that makes everything feel relaxed.

Getting There

Knebworth House is just off the A1(M) at Junction 7, making it easy to reach from London (about 30 miles north) and the wider Hertfordshire area. Stevenage station is approximately ten minutes away by car, with fast trains from London King's Cross in around 25 minutes. Free parking is available on site for all guests.
