My Experience as a DJ at Micklefield Hall
I've performed at Micklefield Hall many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.
Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.
A privately owned 350-acre family estate designed by Sir John Soane, just 25 miles from London. What makes Micklefield Hall stand out is having five licensed ceremony areas: the award-winning Grade II listed 16th-century Great Barn, The Temple, The Orangery, the Garden Room, and the Rose Garden lawns. That kind of choice within a single venue is genuinely rare. The Great Barn hosts up to 200, while a marquee option extends to 320 for larger celebrations. The venue comes with in-house wedding event managers and exclusive use is standard. Two miles from Junction 18 of the M25.
The Great Barn
The 16th-century Great Barn is the centrepiece of Micklefield Hall and one of the finest barn spaces I work in. Grade II listed, with original timber framing and a roof structure that has stood for over 400 years. The proportions are generous without feeling cavernous, and the aged timber absorbs high frequencies naturally, giving the room a warm, rounded sound. Music fills the space evenly, and I rarely need to push volume to create energy. The barn seats up to 200, and when those numbers are in for the evening, the atmosphere builds quickly. The combination of low lighting, warm wood, and a packed room creates exactly the kind of charged, connected feeling that makes a dancefloor work.
During the ceremony, I keep the system understated. The barn's acoustics do the heavy lifting, carrying processional music gently through the space without amplification feeling intrusive. The shift from that calm, reverent atmosphere to a full evening party in the same room is one of the best transitions in any Hertfordshire venue.
Five Ceremony Spaces
No other venue in the county gives you this much choice about where to say your vows. The Great Barn is the obvious option for larger ceremonies, but The Temple, set in the grounds, offers an open-air alternative with a classical backdrop. The Orangery is light and airy with views across the gardens, the Garden Room is intimate and relaxed, and the Rose Garden lawns work beautifully for summer ceremonies with the estate as a backdrop.
From a DJ's perspective, the variety matters. Each space has a different acoustic character, and I adjust the setup accordingly. An outdoor ceremony at The Temple needs a different approach to sound than a ceremony inside the Barn. I plan for each space individually during the consultation, so the music fits wherever you choose to hold your ceremony.
The Grounds and Marquee Option
Three hundred and fifty acres gives you a setting that photographs like nowhere else. The grounds are used for drinks receptions, group shots, and those quiet moments between the ceremony and the evening. I run background music outdoors during the reception, keeping the mood going while your photographer works through the list.
For larger celebrations, a marquee on the grounds extends the capacity to 320. Marquees have their own acoustic personality. Canvas walls absorb less sound than timber or stone, so I adjust the system to compensate. The benefit is space and flexibility. You can design the layout from scratch, and the combination of a marquee evening with the Great Barn or Orangery for the ceremony gives you the best of both settings.
Location
Micklefield Hall is near Rickmansworth in South West Hertfordshire, just two miles from Junction 18 of the M25. That location makes it one of the most accessible venues in the county for guests coming from London and the surrounding areas. Rickmansworth station is on the Metropolitan line, and the estate's private setting means you would never guess how close you are to major transport links.
What Couples Say
It's been 5 months since our wedding day and we both wanted to say a huge thank you for playing a part in making our day so special. We hired Tony as DJ and MC and all of the music, timings and announcements of the day were perfect. Tony brought a really chilled vibe to the day and also encouraged the excitement too at the exact right points throughout the day. So thank you! We absolutely loved the music, especially in the evening and had so much fun dancing. Would highly recommend Tony!
