My Experience as a DJ at Moor Park Mansion

I've performed at Moor Park Mansion many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.

Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.

Some venues impress you the moment you turn off the road, and Moor Park is one of them. A Grade I listed Palladian mansion set in around 300 acres of parkland on the Hertfordshire border, it has hosted Archbishops, Queens and Peers of the Realm across four centuries. For a couple who want grandeur with genuine history behind it, rather than a modern room dressed to look old, this is one of the most striking settings in the county.

The History Behind the Doors

The estate traces back roughly 400 years to a country house built in the deer park of the Manor of More. In the 1720s the mansion was refaced in Portland stone by the architect Giacomo Leoni, who added the great Corinthian portico that still defines the south front. Inside, Sir James Thornhill painted the Great Hall and the Grand Stair, crowning it with a dome in imitation of St Peter's in Rome. The ceiling of the Thornhill Room, painted earlier by Antonio Verrio, depicts Aurora and the Dawn. In 1752 Admiral Lord Anson bought the house and commissioned Capability Brown to reshape the formal gardens into the sweeping parkland that surrounds the mansion today.

There is wartime history here too. During the Second World War the armed forces occupied the mansion, and the Battle of Arnhem was planned in what is now called the Arnhem Room. Few wedding venues can tell a story like that.

The Grand Hall

The Grand Hall is the heart of the mansion and the room most couples build their day around. It seats up to 200 for the wedding breakfast and holds 250 or more standing once the evening gets going, beneath ceilings and decoration that simply cannot be replicated.

From a DJ's point of view, a room like this needs to be understood before it is worked. The height and the hard, ornate surfaces create natural reverb, which is gorgeous for atmosphere but can blur speeches if the setup is rushed. I plan speaker positioning and microphone technique so every word of the toasts lands clearly, then let the room's acoustics add warmth to the music once the dancing begins. The dancefloor works best with the setup positioned so guests flow naturally from their tables, keeping the energy in one place rather than scattered across a large room.

The Dining Room, Conservatory and Thornhill Room

Not every celebration needs 200 guests, and Moor Park flexes well. The Dining Room seats 120 and is filled with natural daylight. The Conservatory is lighter and more relaxed again, holding 80 for dining or around 100 for a drinks reception, and it suits couples who want something more intimate without losing the setting. The Thornhill Room, with its wall paintings and that Verrio ceiling, is a beautiful choice for a smaller ceremony or a characterful reception. The Grosvenor Room and the Orangery add further options depending on how you want the day to flow.

For couples planning a larger celebration, a marquee on the grounds opens the numbers up to 250 or more for the evening, with the mansion and parkland as the backdrop.

The Grounds

Capability Brown's parkland is the reason the approach feels so grand. Sweeping lawns, mature trees and open views give you photographs in every direction and every season, from the portico steps to the wider estate. In summer, drinks and canapes spill out onto the lawns; later in the year the parkland turns and the light through the trees is something special.

Practical Details for Your Day

Moor Park sits just off the M25 at junctions 17 and 18, near Rickmansworth, with Moor Park and Rickmansworth stations close by, so guests travelling from London and across Hertfordshire reach it easily. As a working golf club the estate has plenty of parking, which keeps arrivals and load-in straightforward. There is no accommodation inside the mansion, so most couples block-book nearby hotels for guests staying over. One thing I always flag with a heritage building of this kind: the rooms are protected, so I plan setup, cabling and lighting to work around the original features rather than risk anything precious. It is easily managed, and it means the mansion looks after your day as much as you look after it.

What Couples Say

Having Tony as our DJ and MC was definitely worth it. He had lovely playlist options, he also read the room really well that everyone complimented how good he was and even wants to hire him for our parties. It was a success! Thank you so much DJ Tony for making our Big Day enjoyable and memorable.

Zerah & Andrew

Our guests loved the music. Tony is kind and experienced and worked well with us as bride and groom. He kept an eye on the dancefloor and guests so that the evening worked well for everyone, ages teenage to 90 years old, from many countries. We recommend him.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we have our ceremony at Moor Park Mansion?

Yes. Moor Park is licensed for civil ceremonies, and couples use the Grand Hall, the Thornhill Room and the Conservatory depending on guest numbers and the look they want. The Grand Hall is the showpiece for larger ceremonies, while the Conservatory suits smaller, lighter celebrations. I would confirm the exact licensed rooms and seating with the events team when you book.

How many guests can Moor Park Mansion hold?

The Grand Hall seats up to 200 for a wedding breakfast and holds 250 or more standing for the evening. The Dining Room takes 120 seated, and the Conservatory holds 80 for dining or 100 for a drinks reception. For larger numbers, a marquee on the grounds can accommodate 250+ evening guests.

Is there a music curfew at Moor Park Mansion?

Moor Park sits within a quiet residential estate, so amplified music timing is something to check rather than assume. The events team will give you the exact curfew, and I plan the running order around it so the dancefloor still peaks at the right moment and nothing feels rushed at the end of the night.

Do the painted ceilings and high rooms affect the sound?

They do, and it is worth understanding before the day. The Grand Hall and the Thornhill Room have tall ceilings and hard, ornate surfaces that create natural reverb, beautiful for atmosphere but unforgiving for speeches if the kit is set up carelessly. I position speakers and manage microphones to keep every announcement crisp, then let the room's acoustics work for the music once the dancing starts.

Can we use uplighting near the heritage features?

Yes, and used well it transforms the rooms. The Verrio and Thornhill ceilings respond beautifully to subtle, warm uplighting in amber and gold tones, which flatter the original artwork rather than fighting it. I steer couples away from harsh colour washes on the heritage surfaces and coordinate lighting that suits a Grade I listed interior.

Is there parking at Moor Park Mansion?

Yes. As a working golf club the estate has ample parking on site, which makes load-in and guest arrivals straightforward. There is no accommodation in the mansion itself, so most couples block-book rooms at nearby hotels in Rickmansworth, Northwood or Watford for guests who are travelling.
