My Experience as a DJ at Shendish Manor

I've performed at Shendish Manor many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.

Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.

Dating from 1853, Shendish Manor sits within 160 acres of Hertfordshire parkland and offers two quite different wedding experiences. The Manor House brings ornate ceilings, oak panelling, and a Jacobean fireplace for weddings of up to 94 seated. The contemporary Apsley Suite is a different proposition entirely, air-conditioned, with its own private walled garden, capacity for 320, and the flexibility to partition into four separate rooms. The suite also offers dry hire with kitchen facilities, which is unusual and gives you real freedom. Just 20 minutes from London by train.

The Manor House

The original Victorian manor is where Shendish shows its character. Ornate ceilings, oak panelling, a Jacobean fireplace, and the kind of architectural detail that gives a room weight and presence. Weddings here seat up to 94 for the day and 160 for the evening. It feels like a proper country house celebration.

The acoustics reflect the building's age and materials. Hard plaster ceilings and wood panelling create a lively sound environment where music carries well but can build quickly. I manage that by positioning speakers carefully and keeping the system balanced, so the dancefloor has energy without the room becoming too loud for people standing just a few metres away. The oak panelling adds warmth to the lower frequencies, which gives the music a richness that modern plasterboard rooms simply cannot match. Uplighting works beautifully against the wood and period features, shifting the room from its daytime grandeur to something more intimate and atmospheric for the evening.

The Apsley Suite

This is where Shendish becomes a genuinely versatile venue. The Apsley Suite is a contemporary, purpose-built events space with capacity for up to 280 for dinner and dancing, or 320 theatre-style. Air-conditioned, with its own private walled garden, and the ability to partition into four separate rooms. It is a completely different experience from the Manor House, and that is the point.

The acoustics here are cleaner and more predictable than in the historic building. Modern construction, flat ceiling, and consistent wall surfaces mean the sound behaves evenly across the room. For larger weddings, that predictability is a real advantage. I can set the system up knowing exactly how it will perform, and the air conditioning means the room stays comfortable even with 250 or more people dancing. The partitioning option is useful too. For weddings that start more intimately and grow through the day, you can open up the space in stages, and I adjust the sound coverage to match.

The dry hire option with kitchen facilities is unusual for a venue of this calibre. It gives you freedom to bring in your own caterers, which many couples appreciate. From a DJ's perspective, dry hire venues tend to attract couples who want more creative control over their day, and those weddings are often the most rewarding to be part of.

The Walled Garden

The Apsley Suite's private walled garden is a genuine asset during warmer months. Licensed for outdoor ceremonies and drinks receptions, with enough space for a sizeable gathering. The walled structure provides shelter from wind while keeping the open-sky feeling that makes outdoor ceremonies special. I set up ambient music for garden ceremonies and drinks, using weatherproof speakers positioned to fill the enclosed space without any dead spots. The transition from garden ceremony to indoor reception is a natural mood shift, and I use the music to guide that, building the energy as guests move inside.

Two Venues in One

The real strength of Shendish is that it lets you choose between traditional and contemporary without compromising on either. Couples who want the character and intimacy of a Victorian manor house get that. Couples who want a modern, flexible space for a bigger celebration get that too. And some couples use both, holding the ceremony in the Manor House and the reception in the Apsley Suite. That combination, moving from an intimate, historic room to a larger, more vibrant space, creates a shift in energy that guests notice and respond to.

What Couples Say

Tony was brilliant, no two ways about it. We were a bit worried about our long wedding day potentially having some boring bits, but Tony gave us so many useful suggestions and really delivered on what he said he'd do. The whole day flew by, and many guests said they had a fantastic day. He had the dance floor busy all night, people barely left it! But what I loved most was the fun atmosphere he created during the wedding breakfast. So much laughter. Would definitely recommend him.
