My Experience as a DJ at South Farm
I've performed at South Farm many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.
Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.
Named the UK's most Instagrammable wedding venue and winner of the 2023 Wedding Industry Award for Best Barn Venue, South Farm has earned its reputation. An eco-friendly exclusive-use venue set in 20 acres on the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire border, the grand Tudor Barn seats up to 180 beneath stunning elm beams while five other distinct ceremony spaces give you real choice. The on-site smallholding grows produce used by the chefs, and accommodation ranges from proper bedrooms to Romany caravans and a camping field. Ten minutes from Royston Station, with direct trains to both London and Cambridge.
The Tudor Barn
The Tudor Barn is the main event space and it is a stunning room. Original elm beams, fairy lights woven through the rafters, and a warmth that fills the space the moment you walk in. It seats up to 180 for the wedding breakfast and hosts the evening party, and the proportions are ideal for building atmosphere. The elm beams and timber roof structure absorb high frequencies naturally, giving the room a rich, warm sound. Music sits beautifully in this space at every volume level, from the soft background during dinner to the full energy of a packed dancefloor.
The fairy lights that run through the beams create an evening atmosphere that needs very little additional lighting to feel right. I add uplighting where it enhances the mood, but the barn has such strong visual character already that the lighting setup can be restrained. The combination of warm wood, soft fairy lights, and good sound creates exactly the kind of room where guests lose track of time on the dancefloor.
The Other Five Spaces
What makes South Farm unusual is having six distinct ceremony spaces within one venue. Beyond the Tudor Barn, you have the Drawing Room for intimate ceremonies of up to 35, the Horse Barn for up to 65, the Garden Summerhouse for outdoor ceremonies from March to October, and the Old Dairy with its paddock views for up to 100. Each space has its own character, and I adjust the sound setup for whichever you choose.
The Garden Summerhouse deserves a particular mention. Outdoor ceremonies at South Farm benefit from the rural setting, the 20 acres of grounds, the smallholding animals in the background, and the feeling of being properly in the countryside. I set up a subtle system that carries the music to the seating without competing with the birdsong and the natural sounds of the farm. The contrast between that calm, open-air ceremony and the packed Tudor Barn later in the evening is one of the strongest atmosphere shifts at any venue I work in.
The Eco Ethos
South Farm's commitment to sustainability is genuine, not a marketing angle. The on-site smallholding grows produce that the chefs use in the wedding breakfast. The grounds are managed with biodiversity in mind. The accommodation includes Romany caravans and a camping field alongside traditional bedrooms. Couples who book South Farm tend to care about these things, and it shows in the character of the celebrations.
From a DJ's perspective, the eco ethos translates into a certain kind of atmosphere. The couples and their guests are often more relaxed, more connected to the outdoor setting, and more interested in the experience than the production values. That makes for some of the most enjoyable evenings I work. The dancefloor fills because people are genuinely having a good time, not because the lighting and volume are pushing them there. Exclusive use of the entire site means there is no competing noise, no strangers wandering through, and no compromise on how the day unfolds.
Location
South Farm is at Shingay-cum-Wendy, near Royston, on the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire border. Royston Station is about 10 minutes away, with direct trains to London King's Cross and Cambridge. The A1(M) is accessible for guests driving from London, and the A505 connects to the M11 for those coming from the east. The 20-acre site feels remote and rural, which is part of its charm, but the road access is straightforward.
What Couples Say
What strikes us most about Tony is his ability to read a room. He noticed which guests were shy and crafted the interactive elements to help bring them into the celebration. He saw the energy dips and adjusted the music accordingly. He understood our nerves about being the centre of attention and positioned the activities so we could participate without feeling scrutinised. He observed which of our various friend groups weren't naturally interacting and got them involved. It's this attentiveness that sets him apart from someone who just plays music. He's a genuine facilitator of celebration.
