My Experience as a DJ at Tewin Bury Farm

I've performed at Tewin Bury Farm many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.

Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.

A family-owned working farm hidden in the Mimram Valley, spread across 700 acres of Hertfordshire countryside. The iconic 17th-century Tythe Barn with its solid oak floor and minstrel's gallery sets the tone from the moment guests walk in. The contemporary Meadow Barn scales up to 500 for larger celebrations, while the Millstream Suite runs alongside the River Mimram with its own wooden pagoda for outdoor ceremonies. With 45 bedrooms, two AA Rosette-awarded restaurants, and over 300 weddings hosted each year, the team here knows their craft inside out.

The Tythe Barn

The Tythe Barn is one of those rooms that immediately tells you it is going to be a good night. Seventeenth-century timber framing, a solid oak floor, and a minstrel's gallery that gives the space a sense of occasion from the moment you walk in. The oak floor is worth mentioning specifically because it makes a real difference to how the dancefloor feels. There is a resonance and warmth underfoot that you simply do not get from carpet or modern flooring, and guests notice it even if they cannot pinpoint why.

Acoustically, the Tythe Barn is excellent. The timber construction absorbs harsh frequencies while the vaulted ceiling gives the sound room to develop. Music fills the space naturally without needing to be pushed, and the transition from soft dinner music to a full evening party feels organic. The minstrel's gallery adds visual drama and also creates a slightly different acoustic zone above the main floor, which adds depth to the sound. I position the system to work with the barn's shape, covering the dancefloor and dining area evenly while keeping the volume manageable for guests near the bar.

The Meadow Barn

For larger celebrations, the Meadow Barn scales up to 500 and offers a more contemporary space. It is a purpose-built event barn, which means the infrastructure is solid: good power supply, proper rigging points, and a layout designed for large-scale weddings. The acoustics are different from the Tythe Barn. More spacious, more open, and with surfaces that reflect rather than absorb. At this scale, I bring a larger system and position it carefully to ensure coverage across the whole room without creating dead spots or overpowering the front rows.

Working a 500-person wedding is a different discipline to a 150-person celebration. The energy dynamics change, the room takes longer to warm up, and reading the crowd requires more attention because you are working with a much wider mix of ages, tastes, and energy levels. The Meadow Barn handles it well because the space is designed for exactly this. There is room for the dancefloor to breathe, and the surrounding areas give guests places to settle without feeling disconnected from the party.

The Millstream Suite and River Mimram

The Millstream Suite is the intimate option at Tewin Bury Farm, running alongside the River Mimram with its own wooden pagoda for outdoor ceremonies. It suits smaller weddings of up to 40 and has a completely different atmosphere to the barns. The sound of the river, the natural light, and the garden setting create a calm, relaxed feel that carries through the whole day.

For outdoor ceremonies at the pagoda, I keep the music gentle and unobtrusive. The setting is doing the work, and the sound should complement it rather than compete. The riverside location also works beautifully for drinks receptions, with background music carrying across the garden at a level that adds warmth without intruding on conversation.

A Working Farm Wedding

Tewin Bury Farm is a genuine working farm, not a converted estate with a farm theme. Seven hundred acres of Hertfordshire countryside in the Mimram Valley, and the agricultural character of the place is part of its appeal. Couples who book here tend to want something grounded and real rather than polished and corporate. The farm setting gives the day a relaxed quality that filters through to the evening. People loosen up faster, the atmosphere builds more naturally, and the dancefloor fills with less prompting. The venue's events team, handling over 300 weddings a year, run things with a confidence that means I can focus entirely on the music and the mood.

Location

Tewin Bury Farm is on Hertford Road in Welwyn, Central Hertfordshire. Welwyn North station is close, with services to London Moorgate and King's Cross. The A1(M) is nearby for guests driving, and Hertford and St Albans are both within 15 minutes. The 45 bedrooms on site mean your closest guests can stay without worrying about transport, and the two AA Rosette-awarded restaurants give everyone a reason to linger over breakfast the next morning.
