My Experience as a DJ at The Grove
I've performed at The Grove many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.
Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.
A five-star resort tucked into 300 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, just 20 minutes from London, The Grove is a venue that genuinely delivers on its promise. The glamorous Amber Room, the striking oval glass Cedar ballroom, outdoor vows in the Sunken Garden, evening celebrations in the Walled Garden. Each space has its own character and atmosphere. Capacity ranges from intimate gatherings of 36 right up to 450. With 214 rooms, the award-winning Sequoia Spa, a championship golf course, and Michelin-quality dining, this is a full destination wedding without leaving the Home Counties.
The Amber Suite
The largest function room in the area, with high ceilings, contemporary design, floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto the Formal Gardens. This room holds up to 420 for dinner and dancing, or 700 standing. It is a genuinely impressive space, but it needs enough guests to fill it. With the right numbers, it transforms beautifully.
For a DJ, the Amber Suite is a room that rewards proper preparation. The high ceilings mean sound disperses quickly, so you need a system that fills the space without pushing volume past the point of comfort. Uplighting works brilliantly here. The neutral tones and large windows give you a blank canvas to set the mood. I position the sound to work with the room's natural shape and use the foyer and terrace as natural overflow zones during the evening.
The Cedar Suite
The newest addition and probably the most distinctive space: an oval glass ballroom designed by Martin Hulbert. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a private terrace, and natural light that changes the feel of the room throughout the day. It seats 110 for dinner and dancing, and the acoustics are noticeably good for a glass structure. The oval shape contains the sound more effectively than a rectangular room of similar size, which means the energy on the dancefloor stays concentrated exactly where you want it.
The Mansion and Intimate Spaces
For smaller celebrations, the 18th-century Mansion holds ceremonies for up to 36 guests. Georgian architectural details, a grand staircase, and that sense of history that only a building from the 1720s can deliver. The Ivory Suite is a versatile middle ground at 80 for dinner and dancing, with its own private entrance.
The Outdoor Spaces
The Sunken Garden is where outdoor ceremonies happen: a tree-lined aisle with open sky above and lush greenery framing the whole scene. Licensed for 60 to 450 guests. The 3.5-acre Walled Garden is something else entirely: rustic gates, festoon lighting, the restored Victorian Potting Shed (which seats up to 60 on its own), and a character that feels completely different from the polished interiors of the main hotel. Evening receptions in the Walled Garden have a relaxed, almost festival-like quality.
The Formal Gardens are where drinks receptions happen. Ornamental canals, herbaceous borders, and the terrace overlooked by Captain Cook's Black Walnut tree, planted around 1778 and still standing. The 300-acre grounds offer woodland trails, lakes, rolling parkland, and enough variety that your photographer will not run out of locations.
The Resort
This is where The Grove separates itself from most wedding venues. Your guests are not just attending a wedding; they are checking into a five-star resort. The Sequoia Spa has a 22-metre pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, and 18 treatment rooms. There is a championship golf course. Four restaurants: The Glasshouse (food hall-style with stations), The Stables (seasonal British), Madhu's (elevated Indian fine dining), and The Lounges for afternoon tea. For families, there is an OFSTED-registered kids' club, and in summer, Ralph's Beach, a heated outdoor pool in the Walled Garden.
The 214 rooms split across the contemporary West Wing and the historic Mansion, where 12 individually designed suites include the Villiers Suite with its four-poster bed, open fireplace, and rich velvet furnishings. Most couples take that one for themselves.
Location
The Grove is 18 miles from central London, 20 minutes by train from Euston to Watford Junction. Close to the M25, 30 minutes from both Heathrow and Luton airports, with a helipad on site for those arriving by helicopter. On-site parking for all guests.
A Venue That Works With You
One thing I appreciate about The Grove is the freedom it gives couples. You are not locked into a list of approved suppliers. You choose your own DJ, photographer, florist, and entertainment. External caterers are welcome for specialist requirements. Fireworks are permitted. The events team coordinate everything behind the scenes, but the creative decisions stay with you.
Voted 6th Best Resort in Europe by Conde Nast Traveller readers in 2025, this is a venue with genuine substance behind the reputation.
What Couples Say
We had Tony for our wedding and throughout the whole booking and arranging stage his professionalism and love for the job showed. Tony was both our MC throughout the day and our evening entertainment, we have had almost all the guests comment on what an amazing job he did and how impressed they were with his ability to keep the dance floor busy all night. If you are looking for someone to work your wedding as an MC and DJ then look no further than Tony. He could not do enough for us, kept us on schedule and made our day unforgettable for not only my wife and I but also all of our guests as he kept them feeling involved throughout. I would definitely recommend Tony to anyone and everyone!
From our very first conversation, Tony made us feel completely at ease. He understood exactly what we wanted and delivered it perfectly. The way he managed the flow of the day as MC was seamless, and by evening the dancefloor was packed from the first song to the last.
Tony was absolutely brilliant. He read the room like a professional and kept the energy exactly where it needed to be all night. Our guests are still talking about it weeks later. Worth every penny.
