The turreted red-brick mansion, with its battlements and arched windows, carries centuries of history, while the refurbished Ridings Barn offers something lighter and more relaxed. For couples weighing up grand period rooms against an airy barn, the choice sits in one place, which makes planning a good deal simpler. The Mansion House Suites

The Mansion House is the heart of the estate, a striking red-brick building whose history stretches back centuries and which has hosted nobility across its lifetime. The suites carry genuine period character, with high rooms and original features, and they seat up to 150 guests for a wedding breakfast.

From a DJ's point of view, rooms like these reward a bit of understanding before you work them. The harder surfaces and the height create natural reverb, gorgeous for atmosphere but unforgiving for speeches if the kit is set up carelessly. I plan speaker positioning and microphone technique so every word of the toasts lands cleanly, then let the room add its own warmth once the dancing starts. The dancefloor works best positioned so guests flow naturally from their tables, keeping the energy in one place rather than spread thin across a larger room.

The Ridings Barn

For couples who want something more contemporary, the Ridings Barn is a refurbished, light space with a stylish barn-conversion feel, holding up to 180 guests. It opens onto a Mediterranean-style courtyard, which is the obvious spot for drinks and canapes between the ceremony and the meal.

The acoustic here is more contained than the mansion, which suits a louder evening and a bigger sound on the dancefloor. Access runs through double electric doors off the courtyard, so I bring a trolley on load-in and set up around the layout rather than against it. With clear lines from the bar to the dancefloor, the barn keeps a party moving without anyone feeling boxed in.

The Grounds

The 55 acres of parkland and Italian gardens give you photographs in every direction, from the front of the mansion to the manicured lawns and quieter corners of the estate. In summer the courtyard and the gardens come into their own for drinks outdoors, and the parkland setting keeps the day feeling private even when numbers are high.

Theobalds Estate sits just off the A10 near Cheshunt and Waltham Cross, with good road links and parking on site, so guests travelling from across Hertfordshire and north London reach it easily. With 140 en-suite bedrooms, most couples keep their guests staying over, and there is a complimentary room for the couple on the wedding night, which means everyone wakes up together the next morning. The Ridings Barn has its own smaller car park with access through the courtyard, so I plan load-in and cabling around that rather than leaving it to the day. It is all easily managed, and it means the setup looks after your celebration as much as the venue does.
