There is a particular kind of relief when a venue feels rural but sits minutes from the edge of London. West Lodge Park is exactly that. A family-run country house hotel, owned by the Beale family since 1945, set in 35 acres of mature arboretum in Hadley Wood. For couples who want green and quiet on the day, with guests still able to reach them easily, it is one of the easier places in the county to say yes to.

The Country House and Its Rooms

The hotel itself carries the calm, settled feel of a building that has hosted occasions for generations. Inside, the John Evelyn Suite is the room most couples build their wedding breakfast around, seating up to 102 for dining, while the Lancaster Suite takes up to 54 for a more contained celebration. Smaller rooms such as the Edward Beale and King Charles rooms suit intimate ceremonies and gatherings.

From a DJ's point of view, these are warm, human-scale rooms rather than vast halls, and that works in your favour. Sound stays close and the dancefloor feels full sooner, because the room holds the energy rather than letting it drift. I position the speakers and the dancefloor so guests move naturally from their tables into the dancing, keeping everyone in one place rather than scattered.

Ceremonies and the Garden

West Lodge Park is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 80 guests, indoors or out in the grounds when the weather is kind. An outdoor ceremony among the trees is one of the venue's real draws, and it changes how I plan the sound. Open air swallows volume quickly, so for an outdoor ceremony I bring the right kit to carry your vows and the readings clearly to the back row, then keep it discreet so it never competes with the setting.

The Arboretum and Grounds

The Beale Arboretum is what sets this place apart. Thirty-five acres planted with hundreds of species of trees from around the world, including national collections, with hard paths winding through it. For photographs it gives you depth and colour in every season, from spring green to the deep tones of autumn. In summer, drinks and canapes spill onto the lawn, and the marquee that goes up there takes up to 200 guests for the wedding breakfast and around 230 for the evening. A marquee suits me well as a DJ. It is a blank canvas, so I can place the dancefloor and the sound where they work best, with the soft walls keeping the music contained and the floor lively.

West Lodge Park is a short drive from my Hertfordshire base, with no motorway needed, which means I arrive relaxed and with plenty of time to set up properly rather than racing the clock. The hotel has its own parking, so guest arrivals and load-in are simple. With 59 en-suite bedrooms on site, in classic, executive and luxury styles and including accessible and dog-friendly rooms, the wedding party and guests travelling from a distance can stay over and join you for breakfast the next morning. One thing I always confirm at a country house hotel with bedrooms above the function space: the music curfew, indoors and under the marquee, since the two can differ. Once I have it, I plan the night so nothing feels rushed and the dancefloor still gets its proper finish.
