My Experience as a DJ at Ashridge House

I've performed at Ashridge House many times and know exactly how to make the most of its acoustics, layouts, and vibe - especially within the ceremony and reception spaces, where ambience and lighting play such a huge role.

Whether it's setting the tone during your ceremony or keeping the dancefloor buzzing in the reception area, I tailor everything to match the feel of your day.

Few venues in Hertfordshire carry the weight of history quite like Ashridge House. A former royal residence set within 190 acres of listed gardens in the Chiltern Hills, the estate offers heritage rooms that range from the intimate Fernery to the grand Main Hall. With 189 bedrooms on site, your guests can properly settle in for the weekend. The venue can host two separate weddings simultaneously across Ashridge House and Monks Barn, each with complete privacy. That kind of flexibility, paired with the sheer scale of the grounds, makes it one of the most impressive settings I work in across the county.

The Main Hall

The Main Hall is where the big celebrations happen. High ceilings, tall windows, and a sense of occasion that you feel the moment you walk in. Acoustically, it is a generous room. The height and hard surfaces mean sound carries well, but there is enough space for the music to breathe rather than bounce. I position the system to work with the room's proportions, keeping the dancefloor and top table well covered while letting the volume drop naturally towards the edges where people are chatting. Uplighting along the walls picks up the stonework and panelling beautifully once the daylight fades, and the shift from a sunlit afternoon ceremony to a warm, lit evening celebration is one of those transitions that guests always notice.

The Chapel and Fernery

The Chapel is a stunning ceremony space. Intimate, ornate, and with an atmosphere that needs very little from me beyond carefully chosen processional and recessional music. The acoustics in a stone chapel are naturally reverberant, so I keep the volume low and let the room do the work. Every note carries.

The Fernery offers something completely different. A light, airy glass-roofed room surrounded by greenery, it suits couples who want their ceremony to feel relaxed rather than formal. I set the music to sit underneath the natural sounds of the space, soft enough that it adds warmth without competing with the setting. Both rooms seat smaller numbers, so they work well for couples who want a more personal ceremony before opening up the Main Hall for the reception.

Monks Barn

Monks Barn operates as a completely independent venue within the Ashridge estate. It has its own entrance, its own grounds, and its own atmosphere, rustic and warm in a way that contrasts with the grandeur of the main house. For couples who want a barn wedding with the backup of a 189-bedroom estate, it is a genuinely unusual option. The timber and stone construction gives the barn forgiving acoustics. Warm, natural sound that suits both background dinner music and a full evening party without needing to push the system hard.

Two Weddings, One Estate

What makes Ashridge genuinely rare is the ability to host two completely separate weddings on the same day. Ashridge House and Monks Barn each have their own spaces, their own catering, and their own schedule. From a DJ's perspective, this means careful coordination on timing and sound. The two events never overlap or interfere with each other, but it does require someone who understands the logistics of working within a shared estate. I have worked at venues with multiple simultaneous events before, and the key is precision in setup, soundcheck, and communication with the venue's events team.

Location

Ashridge House is just outside Berkhamsted in West Hertfordshire, within the Chiltern Hills. The A41 is close by, and Berkhamsted station has regular trains to London Euston in around 35 minutes. The 190 acres of grounds include a network of walking trails through the Ashridge Estate, managed by the National Trust, so guests staying the weekend have plenty to explore beyond the wedding itself.
