The primary area where marquees offer financial recuperation is in food and beverage. Fixed venues often charge £15-£25 per bottle corkage. In a private marquee, you can source alcohol at wholesale prices.

For 150 guests consuming 75 bottles of Champagne and 100 bottles of wine, this could save £3,000-£5,000 - effectively subsidising the generator and toilets. However, it rarely offsets the entire infrastructure cost.

Control vs. Responsibility

The decision between a fixed venue and a marquee is fundamentally a trade-off between control and responsibility.

The Fixed Venue Model

  • The atmosphere is curated but static. You fit your vision into the existing space.
  • The venue assumes liability for infrastructure failure. If the toilets block or the power fails, it's their problem.
  • Risk of the "conveyor belt" effect - in peak season, turnover times are tight.

The Marquee Model

Realistic all-in budgets typically start around £30,000-£40,000.

Can we save money by doing things ourselves?

Some elements, yes - sourcing your own alcohol, DIY flowers, family catering. But be cautious with technical infrastructure. Amateur power distribution is dangerous. Underspecified generators fail at peak load. And trying to coordinate 10 suppliers while being the bride or groom is a recipe for stress. At minimum, budget for professional power and coordination.
